Floaters can have different shapes like little black dots, circles, lines, clouds or cobwebs. They can drift around in your field of vision. While disturbing, floaters are very common and usually aren’t cause for alarm.

Eye doctors say you will start to notice floaters when tiny pieces of the eye’s gel-like vitreous break loose within the back part of your eye. From being born and up until our youth the back part of our eyes are gel-like, but as we age that gel-like vitreous starts to dissolve and become liquified. Some undissolved gel particles occasionally will float around in your eye becoming what we call a floater.

Eye doctors say that noticing these floaters from time to time is not a cause for concern. However, if you see a shower of floaters and spots, especially with flashes of light you should seek medical attention immediately from an eye doctor. These symptoms could mean that the vitreous is pulling away from your retina in a medical term called posterior vitreous detachment.

If the vitreous gel pulls on your retina it might create a tear or hole. If a retina is torn, vitreous can enter in the hole and lead to your retina detaching. A recent study published in Ophthalmology showed that, among people who experienced the sudden symptom of eye floaters and/or flashes of light, 39.7 percent had a posterior vitreous detachment and 8.9 percent had a torn retina.

Other research has shown that up to 50 percent of people with a retinal tear will subsequently develop a detachment of the retina, which could lead to significant vision loss.

An eye doctor will require dilation and/or an optomap health screening depending on your circumstances to check the back of your eye for any signs of this happening.
